Botanical Name:
Astrophytum myriostigma
Common Names:
Bishop’s Cap Cactus
Plant Category:
Cactus
Plant/Product Description:
Astrophytum myriostigma, commonly known as Bishop’s Cap Cactus, is a unique and visually striking cactus known for its distinct, rounded shape and prominent vertical ribs. The cactus features a pale green to blue-green body adorned with white speckles that give it a striking, almost shimmering appearance. Its name, "Bishop's Cap," comes from its shape, which resembles a bishop’s mitre or cap. Bishop’s Cap Cactus blooms large, white, funnel-shaped flowers that appear in the summer, adding a pop of color to this otherwise minimalistic cactus. It is a popular choice for cactus collectors and is ideal for low-maintenance gardens or container arrangements.
Plant Care Notes:
- Sunlight: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight. Too much sun can cause the plant to scorch.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Requires well-draining cactus mix with added perlite or pumice for optimal drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). Not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures.
- Dormancy: Astrophytum myriostigma is dormant in the winter, requiring minimal water during this period.
- Propagation: Propagated by seeds or, in some cases, offsets.
- Pests: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids.
Toxicity:
Astrophytum myriostigma is non-toxic to humans and pets.
