Botanical Name:
Cleistocactus strausii
Common Names:
Silver Torch Cactus
Plant Category:
Cactus
Plant/Product Description:
The Cleistocactus strausii, commonly known as the Silver Torch Cactus, is a striking, columnar cactus native to the Andes Mountains in South America. This cactus is admired for its tall, slender stems covered in dense, silvery-white spines that give it a torch-like appearance. The Silver Torch Cactus can grow up to 10 feet (3 meters) tall, making it a dramatic addition to desert-themed landscapes or large container gardens. In late spring to early summer, it produces vibrant, tubular red flowers at the top of its stems, which bloom in the late afternoon and attract pollinators like hummingbirds. Its eye-catching form and striking blooms make it a popular choice among cactus enthusiasts and collectors.
Plant Care Notes:
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate bright, indirect light. It thrives in bright sunlight, which enhances its silver spines and promotes healthy growth.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Reduce watering during the cooler months when the cactus is dormant. Be sure the soil drains well to avoid water retention and root rot.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or pumice to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures.
- Propagation: Propagate by stem cuttings. Allow the cut end to callous for a few days before replanting in well-draining soil.
- Pests: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or scale insects. Regular inspections help maintain plant health.
Toxicity:
The Silver Torch Cactus (Cleistocactus strausii) is non-toxic to humans and pets, but its spines can cause skin irritation, so handle with care.
