Botanical Name:
Cotyledon pendens
Common Names:
Cliff Cotyledon
Plant Category:
Succulent
Plant/Product Description:
Cotyledon pendens, commonly known as Cliff Cotyledon, is a fascinating succulent that is native to the cliffs of South Africa. This plant is known for its unique trailing growth habit, with long, slender stems that cascade elegantly over the sides of containers or rock gardens. The leaves are fleshy, rounded, and have a gray-green to bluish tint with a soft powdery coating, which gives them a silvery appearance. In late winter to early spring, Cotyledon pendens produces clusters of tubular orange to coral-colored flowers that add a vibrant contrast to the foliage. Its trailing growth and colorful blooms make it perfect for hanging baskets, containers, or as a beautiful addition to succulent arrangements.
Plant Care Notes:
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate bright, indirect light. Bright sunlight enhances leaf color and promotes compact growth.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or pumice for optimal drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). It is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures.
- Propagation: Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Allow the cut ends to callous for a few days before replanting in well-draining soil.
- Pests: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Regular inspections help maintain plant health.
Toxicity:
Cotyledon pendens is non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a safe addition to homes and gardens.
