Botanical Name:
Espostoa melanostele
Common Names:
Peruvian Old Lady Cactus
Plant Category:
Cactus
Plant/Product Description:
Espostoa melanostele, commonly known as the Peruvian Old Lady Cactus, is a large, columnar cactus covered in dense white spines that give it a "hairy" appearance, resembling an old lady’s coiffure. This species is native to the Andes, and its long, woolly spines create a unique contrast against its tall, cylindrical body. The Peruvian Old Lady Cactus produces small, white flowers in the summer, which are typically short-lived but add a nice touch to the plant. The plant is slow-growing and makes an excellent addition to cactus collections and desert gardens.
Plant Care Notes:
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate bright, indirect light. Full sun promotes compact growth and vibrant flower blooms.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot.
- Soil: Requires well-draining cactus mix with added perlite or pumice for optimal drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). Not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures.
- Dormancy: Espostoa melanostele is generally dormant in the winter, requiring minimal water during this time.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by seeds or offsets.
- Pests: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids.
Toxicity:
Espostoa melanostele is non-toxic to humans and pets.
