Botanical Name:
Kalanchoe luciae
Common Names:
Flapjacks
Plant Category:
Succulent
Plant/Product Description:
Kalanchoe luciae, commonly known as Flapjacks, is a large, rosette-forming succulent with thick, fleshy, paddle-shaped leaves. The leaves are blue-green with a slight pinkish hue along the edges, and they become more colorful when exposed to full sunlight. This plant’s large, vibrant leaves and compact growth habit make it an eye-catching addition to any succulent collection. In the fall, Kalanchoe luciae produces small, tubular yellow or orange flowers that contrast beautifully with its colorful foliage.
Plant Care Notes:
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun to enhance its vibrant colors and compact growth. Can tolerate partial shade, but full sun encourages the best coloration.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to avoid root rot.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining succulent mix with added perlite or pumice for optimal drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). Not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures.
- Dormancy: Kalanchoe luciae is dormant in the winter, requiring minimal water during this period.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by leaf or stem cuttings.
- Pests: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids.
Toxicity:
Kalanchoe luciae is toxic to pets if ingested, so care should be taken to keep it out of reach of animals.
