Botanical Name:
Pleiospilos nelii
Common Names:
Split Rock
Plant Category:
Succulent
Plant/Product Description:
Pleiospilos nelii, also known as Split Rock, is a fascinating succulent that resembles a pair of rocks, hence its common name. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and split down the middle, creating a unique look that mimics natural stone. These leaves are greenish-grey with reddish hues along the edges. Split Rock blooms with large, daisy-like flowers that are usually yellow, adding a burst of color to the plant. It is ideal for rock gardens, containers, or succulent collections.
Plant Care Notes:
- Sunlight: Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate some direct sun. Full sun can enhance its color and blooming.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent rot.
- Soil: Requires a well-draining succulent or cactus mix with added perlite or pumice for optimal drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70°F and 85°F (21°C to 29°C). Not frost-tolerant and should be protected from freezing temperatures.
- Dormancy: Pleiospilos nelii is dormant in the winter, requiring minimal water during this period.
- Propagation: Can be propagated by leaf cuttings or offsets.
- Pests: Generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids.
Toxicity:
Pleiospilos nelii is non-toxic to humans and pets, making it a safe addition to homes and gardens.
